Finding the Right IMF Job
The following table is intended to provide a high-level overview of the types of vacancies which may be available at the IMF. Economists with relevant professional experience at the national and regional level in macroeconomic policy, quantitative techniques, and country surveillance. |
Generic vacancy advertisements will be posted to Workday seeking candidates for inclusion in our economist pipeline. The advertisement is typically posted twice a year or when the candidate pipeline needs replenishing. Cleared candidates are invited to compete for specific economist job vacancies visible only to candidates included in the pipeline. |

Economists with detailed experience and knowledge in a field that is of relevance to a specific area of the IMF’s work (e.g. finance, taxation, etc.). |

Public-sector officials from member countries with a graduate-level degree in a field related to our work and at least four years of relevant experience. These are two-year positions providing the opportunity to build first-hand knowledge of the IMF’s work. |
The IMF issues a formal call for candidate nominations to member countries through their respective Executive Directors (ED) on an annual or bi-annual basis. |

Government officials from member countries with a post-graduate university degree and at least three years of relevant experience in a public financial institution, economics-related ministry, research institute, or university who are interested in expanding their experience by working for one year with the IMF. |
Candidates are nominated by the authorities in their home country or through their nation’s Executive Director at the IMF. |

Highly-experienced economists who can bring specialized skills to a specific short-term project at IMF HQ or in the field. |

Technical Assistant Experts |
Highly-experienced economists who can bring specialized skills to lead capacity development work at IMF HQ or in other member countries. |

Visiting Scholars |
Short-term assignments for established academics to work with the IMF on a specific and previously defined research project. |
Typically not advertised. The IMF will identify experts in relevant fields and contact them directly. |

Economists about to obtain or who have recently obtained their PhD. Applicants must be under age 34 on entry into the program. |

Recent graduates with a bachelor’s degree in a relevant area such as economics, computer science, statistics, math, or business administration. Unlike other Research Assistant vacancies which are only open to candidates already living in the DC metro area, candidates for the RAP can be located globally at the time of application. |

Candidates should have at least a bachelor’s level degree and should have relevant work experience in economics analysis, research, or database management. Research Assistant candidates must be located in the D.C. Metro area. |

Fund Internship Program (FIP) and other internships |
Current students studying for a PhD or master’s in monetary policy, international economics, public finance, financial markets, or related fields. Other internships in Legal and IT fields will be periodically advertised. Requirements for these internships will be defined on the job advertisement. |
