Summary:
Paraguay has grown rapidly in the past decade and a half, the result of a bounce-back from a crisis in the late 1990s, good macro-policies, and a boom in agricultural commodity prices, which spilled over to the non-tradable sector. Poverty has fallen sharply, from 58 percent in 2002 to 26 percent currently, although it remains one of the highest in Latin America. GDP grew by around 3¾ percent in 2018, despite spill-overs of the Argentine crisis, which resulted in a sharp appreciation of the guaraní vis-à-vis the peso and the real. GDP growth in 2019 is projected to be around 3½ percent as a drought early in the planting season is affecting the soybean harvest. Inflation is within the central bank target range.
