Asia-Pacific Regional Seminar

India – Economic Outlook and Policy Priorities

India was among the fastest-growing economies in the world in the decade before the pandemic, lifting millions out of poverty. COVID-19, however, has hit the country very hard. The severe health crisis caused by the first and second waves in 2020-21 led to deep social and economic harm. Following a strong and broad policy response, and the control of the pandemic, the economic recovery is underway. Nonetheless, the outlook remains clouded due to the uncertainty associated with the pandemic. The IMF Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific hosted a country-based regional seminar with Luis E. Breuer, the IMF’s Senior Resident Representative for India, Nepal, and Bhutan. He provided an overview of current economic developments and the outlook, and discuss long-term policy priorities. Nearly 90 people from across Asia participated in the virtual seminar.
