Press Release: International Monetary Fund and People's Bank of China Announce October 18 Conference in Shanghai on Macro-Prudential Policies: Asian Perspectives

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will sponsor a high-level conference on Macro-Prudential Policies: Asian Perspectives in Shanghai on October 18, with the participation of central bank governors and other officials from Asia, Africa, Europe, and North and South America. The People’s Bank of China (PBC) will host this conference.

The conference comes soon after leading financial officials met in Washington, D.C., at the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings to discuss measures to strengthen the global economy and financial system. It also follows an IMF-sponsored gathering in South Korea of Asian policymakers and opinion leaders in July, at which the Fund committed to forging a new relationship with the region. The Shanghai conference will be co-chaired by the PBC Governor, Zhou Xiaochuan, and IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

The conference is part of the ongoing international examination of the policy challenges posed by the global financial crisis. The conference aims to advance the discussion on incorporating macro-prudential instruments into the broader policy architecture to help ensure financial stability.
