Press Release No. 10/182May 6, 2010
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced today that Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn will travel to Brazil and Peru from May 25-28 to meet with government leaders, leading figures from the private sector, and with students and academics as part of efforts to engage more closely with stakeholders in the region. He will also meet Finance Ministers from the Americas in Lima on May 28 for the “Third Meeting of Finance Ministers of the Americas and Caribbean.”
In São Paulo on May 25, Mr. Strauss-Kahn will take part in a televised panel debate with leaders from the business community about global economic prospects, the changing post-crisis global economy and its implications for the region, and Brazil’s evolving role in international policy-making. He will also visit a research institute. He will meet with senior officials in Brasilia on May 26.
In Peru on May 27, the Managing Director will engage in a discussion with academics and students from several countries at a Town Hall Meeting in Lima, then join a televised round-table discussion with Ministers of Finance from the region on the global economic policy agenda, multilateralism, and the role of Latin America and the IMF.
“Latin America is a region brimming with energy and promise,” Mr. Strauss-Kahn said. “In this post-crisis world, Brazil, Peru and the other emerging economies in the region are well positioned to build on their recent strong macroeconomic track record, and to engage prominently in the global economic policy debate. This visit will present an opportunity for key players to share their insights on the challenges and opportunities facing the world. This region can and must help shape the global policy agenda, including on IMF reforms. The visit will also underscore the IMF’s commitment to serving as a global partner for Latin America,” he added.
