Press Release No. 09/114
April 3, 2009

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mr. Dominique Strauss-Kahn, made the following statement today:

“I welcome the announcement this week by Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper to support the lending capacity of the IMF in the form of a loan of about US$10 billion. We are pleased to see that Canada is joining other members, including Japan, the European Union and Norway, in support of the Fund’s efforts to prevent and resolve economic difficulties in other member countries.

“This important step by the Canadian authorities demonstrates the country’s commitment to international cooperation, and will contribute significantly to strengthening the multilateral response to the economic crisis by increasing confidence that the IMF’s resources will be sufficient to meet the financing needs of its member countries.”
