News Brief: IMF Managing Director Horst Köhler Congratulates Yusuke Horiguchi on Appointment as First Deputy Managing Director of the Institute of International Finance

Horst Köhler, Managing Director, made the following statement today on the appointment of Yusuke Horiguchi as First Deputy Managing Director of the Institute of International Finance:

"Yusuke Horiguchi will be missed by all his colleagues at the Fund when he leaves us towards the end of the year. His selection as First Deputy Managing Director of the Institute of International Finance is an important new challenge, for which Yusuke is extremely well qualified. We will miss Yusuke as a colleague but look forward to working with him in his new position. Over the course of a 25 year career at the Fund, Yusuke has made major contributions to our work with a wide range of countries, most recently as Director of the Asia and Pacific Department. All of us at the Fund wish Yusuke every success for the future."

Mr. Horiguchi, a national of Japan, received his Ph.D. in Economics from Rice University in 1971. After working at the OECD, he joined the IMF in 1978 and held various positions in the African, European, and Western Hemisphere Departments prior to his appointment as Senior Advisor in the Central Asian Department in 1991. He became Deputy Director of the European II Department in 1994, and Deputy Director of the European I Department in 1997. Mr. Horiguchi became Associate Director of the Asia and Pacific Department in 1998 prior to his appointment as the Department's Director in February 2000.
