News Brief: IMF Congratulates Nobel Economics Laureate

The award of the 1999 Nobel Prize for economic sciences to Columbia University professor Robert Mundell was applauded by senior management of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In a statement to the IMF's Executive Board, Shigemitsu Sugisaki, Deputy Managing Director, said:
"It is a pleasure for me to note that as you may have seen from this morning's press reports, Professor Robert Mundell of Columbia University has been awarded this year's Nobel Prize for economic sciences. This is a particular pleasure for us at the IMF because Professor Mundell was a member of the staff of the Research Department in the period 1961-63, and I am told that it was during his time here that some of the work that is now being recognized was done, including the formulation of the Mundell-Flemming model, which has proved so important to our operational work. Professor Mundell also left a legacy in the form of students who have been prominent members of the IMF staff - Michael Mussa, Claudio Loser, Manuel Guitian, Jacob Frenkel and others. Professor Mundell was also a Visiting Scholar in the IMF on several occasions in the 1990s. So, we will be sending our congratulations to Robert Mundell."
