News Brief: Statement by Camdessus on the Death of President Mitterrand
January 8, 1996
The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund,
Michel Camdessus, made the following statement upon learning of the
death of the former President of France, Francois Mitterrand:
"It is with the deepest regret that I have learned of the death
of President Francois Mitterrand of France.
"I wish to add my voice to all those paying tribute to President
Mitterrand's efforts to strengthen the French economy and the French
franc, in the face of the challenges of the end of the century. These
efforts were at one with his commitment toward national and European
solidarity. Beyond this, his sense of solidarity extended to the poorest
countries and to the cause of development, and was indissolubly linked
in his mind with human dignity and with peace. To this he brought the
force and ardor of his personal generosity and of his vision as head
of state.
"I was a frequent witness to his efforts to promote international
cooperation for the sake of development. I wish, therefore, to pay
personal homage to the trust and support he offered to the International
Monetary Fund to help secure for the world economic growth that is
stable, sustained and equitable."
