News Brief: IMF Plans Technical Discussions in Indonesia with Major Parties and Economic Institutions

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has received requests from government and nongovernment sources in Jakarta to engage in early joint technical discussions on the economic situation and on the key economic parameters that could guide economic policy by the new government. These discussions will involve technical economic experts drawn from a wide range of institutions, including the government, the major political parties, universities, and other economic institutions. This effort is aimed at developing a consensus on the macroeconomic framework that should guide policy in the period ahead, as well as on the design of major supporting structural policies. It is expected that the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank will join in these technical discussions.
Such an effort should facilitate the eventual resumption of the IMF-supported program, once the new government has been established, and significant progress has been made in the Bank Bali investigation, inter alia by the release of the full PricewaterhouseCoopers report.
