IMF to Consider Early Assistance for East Timor, in Collaboration with World Bank, United Nations

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been following closely the events in East Timor with a view to helping address the human tragedy that has unfolded for the people of East Timor, and assisting in any efforts that would help alleviate the present hardships. Toward this end, the IMF staff have been in contact with officials from East Timor, and have also participated in today's meeting among potential donors. As soon as conditions allow, the IMF plans to send a fact-finding team to East Timor to assess the economic situation, and to consider ways in which the IMF might play as effective a role as possible in the period immediately ahead. This effort would be closely coordinated with the World Bank, the United Nations, the Asian Development Bank, and other agencies.
