News Brief: IMF Executive Board Discusses Guidance on the Design and Implementation of Conditionality

On June 24, 2002, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund met to discuss issues related to the preparation of guidance for staff on the design and implementation of conditionality. This discussion was on the basis of a paper prepared by staff, which has now been posted for public information on the IMF's website (www.imf.org). The aim is to formulate new guidelines on conditionality incorporating the full range of considerations on which the IMF has focused in its review of conditionality, comprising a series of Board discussions based on staff papers, initiated in the summer of 2000. The Executive Board will return to discuss draft guidelines in September 2002.
