EXECUTIVE BOARD REPORT TO THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY AND FINANCIAL COMMITTEE ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE INDEPENDENT EVALUATION OFFICE (EVO)

April 27, 2001

I. INTRODUCTION

1. At its September 2000 Meeting, the International Monetary and Financial Committee noted the report of the Executive Board on the establishment of the EVO, welcomed the indication that the Board would initiate a search process to identify and to recruit a Director of the EVO, and requested the Board to report back to the Committee at the 2001 Spring Meeting. This report responds to that request.

II. APPOINTMENT OF MR. MONTEK SINGH AHLUWALIA AS
DIRECTOR OF THE EVO

2. The Executive Board has offered an appointment as Director of EVO to Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia which he has accepted. It is expected that Mr. Ahluwalia will take up his appointment in August 2001.

3. Mr. Ahluwalia is a member of the Indian Planning Commission and of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. He was formerly Finance Secretary at the Ministry of Finance of India between 1993 and 1998, and has held a range of senior policy positions within the Indian Government. Mr. Ahluwalia is a prominent economist who has written and spoken extensively on national and international economic issues.
