What is the Road to Lima?

The Road to Lima is the overarching theme for the series of activities which the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and partners in Latin America will organize as we prepare the groundwork for the 2015 Annual Meetings in Lima, Peru. These activities will involve youth, academics, think tanks, the private sector, and civil society organizations throughout Latin America, who will have the opportunity to engage with senior IMF officials and staff throughout 2014 and 2015 on a variety of issues of common interest. Among the IMF officials who will participate in these Road to Lima activities include, but are not limited to: IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, First Deputy Managing Director David Lipton, Economic Counsellor and Director of Research Department, Olivier Blanchard, and Director of the IMF's Western Hemisphere Department Alejandro Werner.

The first of the Road to Lima activities is a series of student outreach events in early March 2014 which will be held in Mexico City, Lima, and Santiago entitled "Latin-America’s Economy and the Future: The Youth’s Voice." David Lipton, IMF First Deputy Managing Director, and Nouriel Roubini, Roubini Global Economics’ Chairman, will hold conversations with undergraduate and graduate students on topics such as inequality, youth unemployment, access to education, extractive industries, and other issues of interest to the students. These events aim to engage this generation of future policymakers in a conversation designed to bring a stronger regional perspective to the global debate about what young people think, discuss how they can begin the process of improving their futures, and the role that they themselves can play in influencing the global economic policymaking process.
