IMF Response to The Ebola Crisis
The Ebola outbreak put severe pressure on already fragile infrastructure and health care systems in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The IMF, recognizing the urgency of the situation—moved quickly to help with an additional $130 million to the three countries so they could fight Ebola.
The involvement of the IMF reflects the mounting macroeconomic impact of the crisis on countries that were making strides in overcoming years of fragility and instability. The additional financial assistance to help combat the epidemic fits within the Fund's mandate to support its member countries in times of economic and social stress with balance of payments and fiscal support.
