amioy world and US GDP from 1950-2006
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am now working on a research project which needs the World and US GDP data from 1950-2006. I am sure that IMF has the relevant data but I don't know where I can find it from the website.

Could you please kindly direct me to the right link?

Unfortunately, we do not provide data prior to 1980 in the WEO database due to difficulty in verifying the data. The only sources I know of that provide data for World GDP from 1950 are:

1) Penn World Tables - country-level real GDP and components data from 1950-2004 in 2000 international dollars.

2) Angus Maddison dataset - country- and regional-level real GDP and population data from 1-2003 AD in 1990 international dollars.

3) Michael Bordo dataset - country-level real GDP and various other macroeconomic series from 1880-1997.

Data from Penn World Tables and from Mr. Michael Bordro are by country from 1950 to 2004 so you may have to aggregate the data to get at World data yourself. You will just have to take note of the countries you include in the sample of world. Angus Maddison has data for World (according to his definition) from 1950 up to 2003.

U.S. data, fortunately, is easy to come by. You can download annual data from 1947 from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Check back here later as some of our other users may have other suggestions for you. Hope this helps and good luck with your project!
