Andrea Schaechter is an advisor in the IMF’s European Department. She has more than 20 years of experience at the IMF, where she was recently the mission chief for Spain and led an IMF-supported program with Romania. She also worked in the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department, including as a principal author of the IMF’s Fiscal Monitor, and in the Monetary and Capital Markets and African Departments. Earlier, she spent two years at the European Commission in the Directorate General of Economic and Financial Affairs. She holds a PhD in economics from the University of Würzburg, Germany.
